Atomiks Past Projects, and Portfolio

Here is some older images of projects, products, and paraphenalia we showcased on our old website from 2011! More recent examples, and updates may be posted to our Atomik Facebook page (see links below).
We have been in business since 2001, originally called Routercut & Laser Specialists with (Colin) manufacturing CNC router and laser cutting machines, in New Zealand - before cheap imported junk was available easily. During that time, Routercut become more involved in using these machines to offer as a cutting service to customers, mainly in the sign industry, but also for industrial manufacturing.
Over the following years, and after 2010, as cheap imported machines started to arrive in NZ, we decided to start supplying cut to size plastic sheets and other laser related materials for other laser owners, and at good rates. As "Routercut" just didn't quite cut it, for an easy to remember marketing name - Atomik Laser, and Atomik Plastics soon became well known.
Soon after, another company called Innovative Lasers, and Trophy House closed, and we were often asked if we could use our laser machines to engrave as well. So, we soon became involved in custom engraving trophies, awards, breadboards, boxes (for both industrial, and giftware markets), mementos, memorials, 21st keys, and other unique products. We also purchased a new fiber laser which is able to engrave hundreds of smaller items at a time, and very quickly as well.

The Arduinome - Lasercut coloured buttons, the backing grid panels and the case that holds everthing together in this cutting edge musical instrument.

Hyperspin Arcade Cabinets. Custom designed flatpack arcade cabinets for Bartop Hyperspin Arcades, able to play all the retro arcade classic games, and more.

Custom designed 250 class FPV racing quad. It is full carbon fiber - including the props, fully aerodynamic, and all under 500 grams

Our old router cutting a 3D relief map of New Zealand. It is 1.5 meters long, and the terrain (Mt Cook) is about 20mm tall. You can just see the South Island in the foreground.

The gantry part of a 5 axis machine - capable of cutting 3D models, as the main cutting head on a "B/C Doughty Drive" spun around in all axis!

An adjustable hot wire and a rotary table - polystyrene block cutting machine. With a curved hot wire it would cut curves as well.

Custom clamp, and you can see here the concept was quickly sketched on paper. It was then designed in CAD, and lasercut parts were created to test the simple mechanism before a run is cut and assembled from aluminium.

Created by students at VUW - The Wellington School of Design, this is a prototype cnc machine we laser cut for them from clear acrylic. It actually functions and shows the working principles. A final heavy duty machine was cut from steel.

A water bath table and diamond cutters for engraving stone, the water flowing over the cutter keeps the dust down, keeps the cutter clear, and cools the cutting surfaces. Each tile in jig is 400mm square.

CAD design based from actual Mana Island elevation data maps, we CNC cut multiple profiles. Material usage and weight is minimised by making each profile an outer border only. It is actually fairly hollow inside.

There are internal support profiles which also "key" everything accurately together using dowel rods. Each layer is 5mm thick, so you can do some math to find its actual height.. It is close to 3 meters long!

3D CNC milled from actual terrain data. This large model is a meter square, and was professionally painted with actual aerial imagery.

This is a small terrain model cut from HD hard PVC material, and painted.

Another larger model showing some expected detail, this one using HD hard PVC material. It has a slightly rough texture when finished, and is ideal for terrain models.

A unique award reflecting :) the companies product and design.

Deep V model "Woody" professional speed boat. Laser cut marine ply. All parts fit together with perfect symmetry..

Buick badge in brass. A 2mm thick custom brass badge we easily cnc cut on our router table. This now sits proudly on the radiator of a restored old classic.

McLaughlin badge in brass. Replace missing brass badges to match the originals as close as possible.

Custom made meter long conveyor dispenser. It all sits on a digital scale, monitors, and maintains constant flow of the material leaving the hopper.

a planetry gear type system to rotate a group of offset polyethylene clamps to hold the delicate platinum tray securely in place while its being polished.

Rear of the prototype unit. The hub holds a spring, which presses on a plate which gives some pressure onto the rear of the tray to be polished.

The platinum tray, when loaded, sits behind the cams when they are closed.

This hexacopter is designed to be lightweight, and strong, it is made from aluminium/magnesium alloy. It is powerful enough to lift heavy video and camera gear.

We designed, lasercut from thin marine ply (may iterations!) and finally built a couple of these Hydroplane (aka Tunnel Hull) professional racing speedboats.
